The project

Microfluidic devices are small analysis equipment. By connecting different miniaturized elements (reaction chambers, detectors, etc) through channels up to the micron, it is possible to perform multiple quantitative analyses with a very small volume of sample (≤µL).

This technology is revolutionizing the fields of chemical and biological analyses and will eventually become a cornerstone for all kinds of analyses, from clinical check-ups to water controls. However, there is still plenty of room for technical improvement.

Pump it Nanotech S.L business’ initiative is to develop and commercialize unique multifunctional MEMs (BKFM1 Bubble Killer and Fluids Mixer no.1) adaptable to microfluidic devices that solve several critical problems easily working as a one stop solution, adding value by improving its performance:

  1. Eliminate bubbles, even in micro gravity conditions such as ESA projects. 
  2. MIx reagents easily.

Our system uses piezoelectric precision adaptable materials to any microfluidic system.

Pump It Nanotech S.L. is sponsored by the Europe Espacial Agency with 50.000€ funds and the inclusion in them accelerator platform in Castelldefels.  

 

Business opportunity

Nowadays, several different 1st generation microfluidic products are sold by our target customers such as Point-of-Care (device to do health diagnostics at home), Lab-on-a-Chip (device to do pharmacological analysis) and so on. These Microfluidic and BioMEMs companies are currently trying to develop their products to reach the 2nd and 3rd generation and this means improving the technologies they currently use.

The current devices in the market are dealing with the bubbles and the mixture of fluids using different routes independently.

By substituting the actual bubble and mixing solutions with our BKFM1, critical aspects such as device size, sensibility, time of analysis and others will improve significantly.

Pharmaceutical, Point-of-Care and clinical diagnostics represent nowadays more than 60% of the worldwide microfluidic devices market and are expected to grow at an estimated yearly rate of 19%. This market is going to expand exponentially in the near future, allowing for example families to have their own blood or urine analysis by using microfluidic devices at home, in which our BKFM1 is planned to be integrated into. We plan to focus our efforts on that specific segment of the market by selling our BKFM1 directly to the main Pharma and Bio Companies so that they can implement it in the Point-of Care and Lab-on –a-Chip devices and selling eventually directly to hospitals, laboratories and families.

Microfluidics market is an early one that will reach the 2.6Bn in 2016 witch a market growth of 19% per year in the next 5 ones. About 300 companies are working in that sector in Eurpoe, Asia and North América. 

Pump It Nanotech product (BKFM11) has 1€ marginal costs, just the 2% of an standard microfluidic device.

The system could also be adapted to the production of actual microfluidic devices and has an independent funcionality to the final device. Thus, our principal customers would be the market liders, especially the medical and bio comanies which represent the 60% of the market.

Product/Service

Our product BKFM1 is a microelectromechanicalsystem (MEMs) specifically designed for microfluidic devices. It allows eliminating bubbles and mixing fluids easily by using piezoelectric actuation. Therefore our product improves the microfluidic device’s performance by decreasing the time of analysis, improving the signal quality and diminishing the device size.

The strong point of our device is that its performance does not depend on the goal of the device, being implementable in Point-of-Care, Lab-on-a-Chip and µTAS devices.

Although its generic application in any kind of analysis segments (waters, food, etc), the greatest social impact of microfluidics regards to health and diagnosis. Concretely in Point-of-Care and Lab-on-a-Chip devices whose development multi-million investments are being financed by important investing platforms like Bioventures Investors and has the potential to substitute the actual diagnostic procedures, reducing drastically the resources needed in these processes.

 

Our actual product is currently a MEMs design that has been simulated, evaluated and validated by the Pump It Nanotech team and experts from the IMB-CNM (TRL 2). Nonetheless, thanks to the collaboration with a research centre specialist in MEMs and Microfluidics as it is the IMB-CNM, we expect to be able to produce the first prototype during the early second year.

We are offering an easily implementable, innovative and cheap multifunctional device capable of solving the challenges exposed before at once.

Moreover, it is not only competitive in performance with its competitors in the market (decreasing time of analysis, improving signal quality) but the device itself is much smaller than them together which is an important point in favour of our product due to the importance of the size in microfluidic devices.

Marketing & sales

The product development will be known gradually in our first contacts with our customers and partners of the described target market (pharmaceutical/clinical/point-of-care diagnostics). At the same time, when the prototype is ready we plan to make it known officially in different conventions and conferences at international level in the field of microfluidics. Since our final clients are the Microfluidic Market Leaders, and their number is scarce, we expect our technology to be known worldwide by fall 2017 when the prototype is finished and fully working.

In this regard, our product will be presented as a versatile and innovative solution to solve common problems in microfluidic applications and devices, by using nanotechnology and piezomaterials.
